Fried Chickpea Patties


So these fried chickpea patties are like falafel which is also made with chickpeas.

However a big different is using a canned chickpeas.


Falafel is made with dry chickpeas, and these patties are made with canned chickpeas.


Using canned beans is much much easier than using dry ones. (Though, of course if you prefer to use dry one, please do so, and it will give you more authentic and rich flavor.)


If you're in a hurry, and/or there's a can of chickpeas in your pantry, this recipe is a must try. You'll be surprised how delicious it is, especially considering the ease of making it.


This is a high protein dish and makes an excellent replacement for vegetarian burger, and the protein and fiber may keep you feeling full for a long time. Additionally, chickpeas are packed with lots of nutrients!


Falafel is great with homemade hummus and pita bread, so, here are a couple of recipes for those:




4 small patties

Ingredients

  • 2 cans chickpea beans, drained

  • 1/3 cup cilantro, chopped

  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley

  • 1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped

  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 1 tablespoon red chili paste

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin

  • 2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 egg white

  • Oil for frying

Directions

  • Place all but the egg white into a food processor and pulse to combine until coarsely mashed. Transfer to a medium bowl.

  • In a small bowl, whisk the egg white until foamy and add to the bean mixture. Cover and chill at least 30 minutes, until ready to cook.

  • Make 4 patties. Heat a medium size skillet with up to 1/2 inch of oil.

  • Carefully drop the falafel patties in the oil, let them fry for about 3 to 5 minutes or until crispy and medium brown on the outside. Avoid crowding the patties in the skillet, fry them in batches if necessary.

  • Drain on a plate lined with paper towels.
